Modern Radar was founded in 2006 and is a one woman business based Durham, NC. Growing up I learned to love fabric and sewing by watching my mom make everything from clothing to curtains. Screenprinting was something I picked up in college, and originally thought I would print posters rather than fabric or cards. Moving to North Carolina helped me to discover my real interest was in surface design and textiles. So by combining those skills with about 12 years of retail experience, I found a way to put everything I'd learned to good use...working from my garage studio where I print my products the "old-fashioned" way, using handmade equipment and a perfectionist's eye.
I enjoy creating patterns that are clean, simple, and bold. All my designs start from original pen and pencil drawings, perfected on paper then scanned into the computer and prepped to print (the one exception would be the "owls" design which is a favorite vintage design).
When printing on both paper and fabric I use low-toxicity acrylic inks. I also work very hard to create as little waste as possible during production, recycling or donating any leftover materials I cannot use. I almost always use reclaimed, recycled, or vintage supplies to package and ship my products, and try very hard to source my other supplies from companies that promote fair labor and environmentally friendly practices.
